Excursion Description
From Piano Provenzana, you reach an altitude of 2,900 meters by traveling in off-road vehicles along a high mountain track, traced through suggestive expanses of lava and volcanic sand along the fracture that opened during the 2002 eruption. During the ascent, we will stop to walk to the buttonhole of the 2002 craters.
From here, the breathtaking panorama embraces the Gulf of Taormina, the Bay of Naxos, the Strait of Messina, Calabria, and the Nebrodi mountain range. You can admire some of the most suggestive landscapes in the world, lunar landscapes created by multiple lateral eruptions along the north flank of Etna.
Continuing our excursion with our off-road vehicles up to an altitude of 2840 meters, we will reach the Pizzi Deneri volcanological observatory. From this point, the ascent on foot will begin on a path surrounded by volcanic slag and bombs. The total ascent is 300 meters until reaching a panoramic point at an altitude of 2900 meters.
There we will stop to admire the grandeur, uniqueness, and processes of the volcanic environment, combined with the spectacle of the view that can be enjoyed from the roof of Sicily. In good weather, you can see both the "Leone" valley and the "Bove" valley, the majesty of the North East (3327 m) and South East (3294 m) craters.
The tour ends by returning, crossing Piano delle Concazze, and then descending to Piano Provenzana, the arrival point of our excursion.
